The Wolff Lab is working on building open-architecture additive manufacturing platforms to control how depositing powders interact with a laser beam. These platforms are used in a high-energy X-ray source to observe the dynamic physical phenomena that occur during the additive manufacturing process. The goal of this research is to identify and control the laser-matter interactions that occur when particles deposit into a melt pool during additive manufacturing. This is important because this knowledge can provide new methods of processing, synthesizing, and building of new materials with fine-tuned properties.
